A Modern, New Kind Of Library In China

Boston-based architect, Preston Scott Cohen has designed a stunning new library building in Datong, China.

Cohen’s design has a pleasing interior structure that is full of light, and features a grandeur of bookshelves lining up four storeys.

To design this building, Cohen even utilized aircraft design software in order for the building to retain its structure in the future, should it require additional wings or portions to be built.

Datong Library aims to be both a place of community gathering, as well as a place of quiet study. His building layout that places a garden courtyard in the center of classrooms, a gallery, informal reading spaces, and an auditorium—places community at the heart of its spaces.

Datong Library is currently in construction and is expected to open in early 2014.
